In finance, technical analysis is an analysis method of predicting the direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume. Behavioral economics and quantitative analysis use many of the same tools of technical analysis, which is one aspect of active management that stands in contrast to modern portfolio theory. The effectiveness of both technical and fundamental analysis has been disputed by efficient-market estimates, which say that stock market prices are largely undesirable, and that research has produced mixed results on whether technical analysis yields any benefits. It has been described by many academics as pseudoscience.
